Nirmal furniture

tradition traditional-present Nirmal, Telangana India

Nirmal furniture is handmade wooden furniture made in Nirmal, a small town in the Nirmal district of Telangana, India, long known as a craft center. Built by local artisan families rather than factories, each piece is shaped, finished and then hand-painted with the town's traditional decorative designs, and given the exceptionally smooth finishing for which the craft is famous. The furniture belongs to the same artisan ecosystem as Nirmal paintings and the celebrated Nirmal toys, and shares their warm, ornamental surface treatment, a workshop tradition handed down within artisan families over generations. In 2009 Nirmal furniture received Geographical Indication rights, recognizing the craft as a product of this specific place and its makers.
