Inconnu Independent Art Group

also: Inconnu Art Group · Inconnu Csoport

school movement c. 1978-1989 (revived after 1994) Hungary

The Inconnu Art Group was a Hungarian collective of maverick fine artists formed around 1978 in Cegléd (the name 'inconnu' came later), working through the communist and postcommunist eras. Their often-illegal exhibitions and performances of the 1980s made them part of the Hungarian democratic opposition, known at home and abroad; from 1979 they were subject to surveillance and police pursuit. The 1986 exhibition The Fighting City was confiscated and destroyed by the authorities - the works survive only in the state-security photographs taken before the shredding. The group's story was critically revisited in the 2019 Blinken Open Society Archives exhibition Left Turn, Right Turn. Some members resumed activity after 1994; the group matters as a case of art made and circulated under political pressure, more than as a fixed visual style.
