Cartographic Art, as WikiArt files it, is a loose category rather than a movement: works made across the 20th century that adopt the map - its flat projection, its colored countries, its grids of names - as image or organizing structure. Bruno Munari's Cosmic Map (1930) imagines the world as emblem; Öyvind Fahlström's variable world maps of the 1960s-70s let geography be rearranged as political play; Alighiero Boetti's embroidered Mappa del mondo tapestries chart the Cold War world in national flags; Ion Bitzan's continents float as shaped panels. What unites them is conceptual: the map treated not as a window on space but as a coded, manipulable image of power. The category cuts across movements, from Futurism-adjacent design to Arte Povera and conceptual art.
